In Catholicism, there is no divorce. A marriage is "annulled" which means the marriage is made invalid. The person who is the cause of annulment can no longer remarry citing the possibilities of future marriage annulments but the other can. An annulment happens at the higher hierarchy of the Catholic Church. If a person divorces in a court of law, it is not recognised by the Church and that person cannot remarry within the Catholic Church. If the person does remarry outside the Catholic Church, there are consequences.
