How do you quilt?

I've saved all of my sons cute clothes from his first year and I want to make a quilt to give him when he's older. I have never quilted before and am just now getting familiar with a sewing machine. I don't really have anyone to help me in my area, so whatever advice anyone can give would be great. How do I go about cutting out the squares evenly from the clothes? How do I get started after cutting the squares?
